چکیده

A pot experiment was used to assess the N uptake by pine seedlings 24 during two years on a burnt soil added with 15 N-labelled ryegrass, obtained from 25 a 15 N-enriched sample of this soil after the fire. Nitrogen concentration in needles, 26 stems and roots of seedlings decreased significantly from the first to the second 27 1.12% of the added ryegrass-15 N was recovered: two thirds in the soil organic N 30 pool and one third in the pine seedlings. Therefore, the post fire pulse of 31 inorganic N, which was successfully kept in the burnt soil-plant system through 32 its uptake by the pioneer species, is available for trees at the medium term. Pine 33 seedlings assimilated 16.4% and 16.9% of the added ryegrass-15 N in the first and 34 the second year, respectively. This result contrasts with the usual yearly decrease 35 of added N uptake by plants; a possible explanation is the transient increase of 36 available N in burnt soils that would have modified the mineralization pattern

Clear cutting and burning affect nitrogen supply, phosphorus fractions and seedling growth in soils from a Wyoming lodgepole pine forest

Timber harvesting, with and without prescribed slash ®re, and wild ®re are common disturbances in pine forests of western North America. These disturbances can alter soil nitrogen (N) pools and N supply to colonizing vegetation, but their in ̄uence remains poorly understood for many forests. We investigated the effects of clear cut harvesting and ®re on KCl extractable N pools, net N mineralizat...

Iron nutrition of Pinus elliotii var. densa seedlings in two soils with different iron availability

Seedlings of endangered Dade County pine, Pinus elliotii var. densa, must survive long enough to form symbiotic associations with ectomycorrhizal fungi that assist uptake of mineral nutrients. Although plants need nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) in relatively large quantities, pine seedlings also may need relatively high amounts of iron (Fe). We hypothesized that iron would limi...

Effects of herbaceous and woody plant control on Pinus palustris growth and foliar nutrients through six growing seasons

To determine if either herbaceous or woody plants are more competitive with longleaf pine (Pinuspalustris P. Mill.) seedlings, two vegetation management treatments-herbaceous plant control (HPC, No or Yes) and woody plant control (WPC, No or Yes) were applied in newly established longleaf pine plantings in a randomized complete block 2 x 2 factorial design in two studies (a = 0.05). Both studie...

The influence of elevated carbon dioxide and water availability on herbaceous weed development and growth of transplanted loblolly pine (Pinus taeda).

Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedlings were grown in competition with native weeds using soil and seed bank collected from recently chopped and burned areas near Appomattox, Virginia. One-year-old seedlings were planted and weeds allowed to germinate from the native seed bank while being exposed to CO(2) (ambient and elevated - approximately 700 ppm) and water (water stressed and well watered...

Transpiration and Physico-chemical Properties of Leaves as Related to Drought Resistance in Loblolly Pine and Shortleaf Pine.

In the reforestation program now being carried on by various state and federal agencies, many millions of tree seedlings are planted each year. An extremely large number of these planted seedlings are killed within the first year or two after planting. One of the major causes of the fatalities is the inability of seedlings to resist drought. If the properties involved in drought resistance of s...
